Today, I set sail to uncharted territory -
Healthy Living. My body is running amok! My cholesterol has gone places that it has no business being, my diabetes control levels are just this side of normal, my blood pressure has almost reached its peak, and I can definitely pinch more than an inch. In fact, I can use both hands! I ran a little reconnaissance, and decided hmm... time for a change.
So...I'm embarking on a healthy living regime. My plan is to modify my diet, and exercise. Just by walking 2 miles, 3 times a day, you can lose 16 pounds a year! Imagine if I walked and changed my diet! As of now, that's my goal. I should be able to handle that, right?
In anticipation of this grand event, I'd downloaded/installed an app called, 'Edmondo Sports Tracker" to my Android Phone. This is a free app, but offers many features:
Track any outdoor sport including duration, distance, speed and calories
- Get audio feedback for every mile or km while exercising
- Check out the newsfeed with recent workouts and other activities done by your friends
- Send peptalks to your friends in real-time from the newsfeed (you write a message that is played aloud to them a few seconds later) and comment on their workouts
- Track your heart rate (works with ANT+ heart rate monitors and requires a Fisica Sensor Key, more info at store.endomondo.com)
- Set a distance goal and have the audio coach speak to that as your target
- Study routes nearby and use the map to navigate your way around
- View history of workouts and study split times per km or mile
- Race against a friend's time and have the audio coach help you perform better
- Compete on a specific route nearby and Race against the route champion
- Set the app to pause automatically when you are not moving
- Enable countdown (customizable)
- Customize the main screen to show the information that you find most valuable
- Enter a workout manually, e.g., a treadmill run, spinning or weight training
- Sign up with your Facebook account
- Use Facebook and/or phone book to hook up with your friends on Endomondo
So, I got up with the birds this morning, or "as the crows fly," 7 AM. Drove over to the new walking track at a nearby middle school. There are several tracks I can use, but this particular track is close to my mother's house,
and I
can pass it on the way to work. Barring a broken leg, or
total mental incapacity, I have no excuse not to walk, - at least while the weather's nice!
Oh, and did I mention that I'm on vacation the next 2 weeks? "No excuses!"
It took me about 45 minutes to complete my 2 miles. Hopefully, I can decrease the time to 30 mns. I was fiddling with the phone, and trying to listen to music, but we'll see. By the way, the app seems to work fine, but I was only checking mileage this morning.
When I returned home, I was sweaty, tired and famished! Don't think I'm supposed to eat before I do the walk thing.... Anyway, I boiled 2 large eggs (155 calories), nuked 2 slices of sodium free bacon (80 cal.), and toasted 2 slices of honey wheat bread (150 calories), which I topped with 2 Tbsp. onion & chive cream cheese spread (90 calories), and finished w/an 8 oz. glass of orange juice (110 cal), and a 6 oz. cup of black coffee w/ a dollop of pet milk. A total of 585 calories. Sounds excessive!! Maybe I SHOULD walk AFTER I eat!
But no worries...I'm sure I've burned off at least half of those cals, sitting here on my derriere, pecking away.
